Henna Body Art
Henna is from the plant that thrives in hot, dry climates. The use of the herb for health and beauty is far older than the British discovery. Samples have been carbon-dated back to 3,500 BC, meaning it has been in use by humans for 7,000 years.
Henna is a Persian word for the plant that has many names. In Arabic is is called khanna. In India, henna is called by many names depending on the dialect: menhadi, mehendi, mehedi, mendi, hina, and mendika. Ancient hieroglyphs in tombs in the Valley of the Nile refer to it using the Egyptian name pouguer. This name refers to the dye created from the plant that is used to color the fingernails of mummies. A lovely perfume created from the henna plant is mentioned in the K'oran as camphire. Hindus of India call it Mehndi, a name synonymous with the plant used for temporary tattoos. In early India, henna was applied by dipping palms and soles into a thick paste of crushed fresh leaves, creating a solid red stain without pattern. Middle Eastern henna decoration was done by mixing dried leaves in a paste and applying it with a stick. Henna is still in use in parts of Asia, especially India and in the Middle East and North African countries, where it flourishes. It is fast becoming popularcatching in the United States and Europe.

"Terps" ~ 100% Essential Oils
I combine Cajeput and Lavender Essential Oils. This combination is one of the safest blends for sensitive skin types, yet is very effective in creating dark henna designs. Available in a 4 gram brown glass vial, 7 gram brown glass vial and 2 oz. brown bottle with dropper.

"Terps" is a word henna artists use to refer to terpenes, especially monoterpene alcohols. Plants make terpenes, just like they make starches, proteins and sugars. Some plants have high levels of monoterpene alcohol, and we can use these by distilling their essential oils. Many Essential Oils contain terpenes which are hydrocarbon solvents. Hennotannic acid, the dye in henna, is hydrophobic rather than hydrophillic, thus water is not the most efffective means to release and darken henna. One of the most useful and least harmful of these terpenes is terpineol, found in high concentrations in Tea Tree, Cjeput and Ravensara Essential Oils. These Essential Oils have a high content of Terponal. The addition of these Essential Oils to Henna have been proven to darken henna stains. Essential Oils that have reliably high levels of the safest, most useful monterpene alcohols are: Tea Tree, Cajeput and Ravensara. Essential Oils that are nearly as good are: Lavender, Geranium, Cardamom, Cypress and Cypress Tips. Essential Oils that have lower levels of effective terpines, but which will darken henna somewhat are: Meroli, Pine, Juniper, Thyme, Rosemary and Marjoram.
Do not put something on your skin that doesn't have an ingredient list.
